Abstract
In this chapter, a brief review of the ancient to modern approaches used to study and to treat subdural hematoma was performed. During the ancient period there were very important achievements of the Hellenic Hippocrates of Kos, the first documented neurosurgeon in history before the twentieth century and the Modern Era. We analyzed the efforts that occurred during the fifteenth century, the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries, and the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Our analysis covered from the first descriptions by Ambroise Paré, through the studies of Giovanni Battista Morgagni and Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow, to the modern era according to Τracy Jackson Putnam and Harvey Cushing, the father of modern neurosurgery.
