Abstract
Breast cancer is an ancient disease. Surgery was not done to breast cancer in ancient Egypt. Galen described the appearance of cancer as a crab and excised it. The nineteenth to twentieth century was described as a second period which contained many developments in surgery. Halsted described radical mastectomy which was preferred for breast cancer surgery until 1950 in Europe and until 1983 in the USA. Modified radical mastectomy got the upper hand over Halsted radical mastectomy because of its radicalness and morbidities. With Veronesi, the new concept, going from maximum to minimum acceptable treatment, opened a new era for breast cancer surgery. Even though modified radical mastectomy is still useful for some patients, most preferred techniques are breast-conserving surgery and oncoplastic approach with or without reconstruction.
