Abstract

GI bleeding overall is the most common cause of hospitalization due to GI disease in the United States. Lower GI bleeding (LGIB) is defined as bleeding from a source distal to the ligament of Treitz. While the vast majority of these are managed medically, failure of more conservative management may ultimately require surgical intervention. This chapter is aimed at describing the scope of the problem, determining the optimal methods of diagnosis and initial intervention, and assisting colorectal surgeons and clinician in describing a methodologic approach to diagnosis, conservative management, and appropriate indications for surgery.
