Abstract
Lower limb nerve blocks may be extremely beneficial in an austere or combat environment. Nerve blocks can be useful as pain control after trauma, as an adjunct to sedation or general anesthesia, or to facilitate surgical interventions of their own.
Nowadays the modality of ultrasound guided nerve blocks is within the scope of practice for most healthcare providers in an austere and combat setting.
However, it is important to point out that nerve blocks are not without serious risks and it is paramount that anyone performing these interventions has the proper training and a sound knowledge of the underlying theory and anatomy.
The use of nerve blocks of the lower limb will reduce the need for systemic opioids or other potent analgesics/sedatives. This may reduce complications like over sedation, respiratory depression and nausea/vomiting. Good pain control may also facilitate evacuation and transportation of a trauma victim.
