Chromogranins are the major component of the neurosecretory granules of neuroendocrine cells, neurons, and adrenal medulla.
Features
Chromogranins are proteins belonging to the granin family, which is made of eight acid, soluble secretory proteins: Chromogranin A, Chromogranin B, Secretogranin II, Secretogranin III (1B1075), Secretogranin IV (HISL-19), Secretogranin V (7B2), Secretogranin VI (NESP55), Secretogranin VII (VGF), and Secretogranin VIII (proSAAS). Chromogranins interact with other components of the granules, such as catecholamines, serotonin, and histamine, and contribute to the formation of the neurosecretory granules, under specific conditions of low pH and high calcium levels. In addition to the role in the making of the granules, the granins are also proproteins.
