Abstract
The ageing of the population and care for the older people underlines the need for public policies, capable of addressing care in a sustainable and equitable manner, with the focus on the problems and needs of caregivers. However, there are still very few studies about proposals for improving care for the older persons, for caregivers and, consequently, for better ageing, being the gap particularly remarkable concerning the need for support programmes designed for caregivers, mainly women. The purpose of this chapter is to offer the results of specific proposals for elder care and of support programmes for carers, using qualitative methodology based on the testimonies of caregivers and heads of care programmes. The results of two projects on ageing and gender have been used for this purpose. The proposals are presented in relation to: Care in the context of the health service, the psychosocial sphere, social and labour policies and transversal demands. Taking into account the results obtained, the chapter reflects on the ambiguity and contradictions of some crucial aspects related to the activity of caregivers of elders, such as the role of external care centres versus the home environment, or the persistent reproduction of the patriarchal model of sexual division of work which delegates the tasks of caregiving to women.
