Abstract

Evidence of the importance attached to cephalopods can be found in the extent to which they feature in the visual arts of many cultures from ancient times right up to the present. Octopuses were particularly popular, being depicted on vases, pitchers, and other everyday objects and found in more artistic settings such as mosaics and frescoes. They appear as symbols on coins, jewelry, and ornaments. These sea creatures also caught the eye of poets, philosophers, and historians, who described them extensively both in classical writings and in modern works.
