Abstract
The chapter is unique in covering ground commonly neglected in other textbooks in this topic. It discusses several patterns of how prosody signals meaningful structuring in larger units of both monologue and dialogue speech. The examples include the deployment and realization of words like ‘and’, ‘um’, or ‘okay’ and using prosody for signaling the relationship between larger chunks of speech. Benus also covers the participation of prosody in turn-taking organization and explores speech entrainment as a means for negotiating strategic alliances in social communication. The skill building with Praat is concluded with activities using basic scripting and feature extraction from recorded speech.

Notes
- 1.
Discourse is a multi-faceted term and the object of study in a broad area of discourse analysis. Therefore, discourse in a broader sense may refer to both linguistics but also to other political, social and institutional domains, educational or media discourse, or even larger aspects of culture or genres.
