Obesity, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Abstract

Bariatric surgery has become an acceptable and effective method of managing obesity and often results in durable and sustainable weight loss with the added benefit of resolving some of the obesity-related comorbidities. Hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnea often improve, if not completely resolve, after weight loss. Specialist nursing care ensures a positive experience and outcome for the patient. During a pandemic or highly infectious disease situation, there is an enhanced importance of effective nursing care in order to mitigate any harm to patients. This chapter provides information on the multidisciplinary approach to specialist nursing care and the valuable input of the specialist bariatric physiotherapist in the care of bariatric surgery patients right from referral to discharge. It also provides a synopsis of modified nursing care in the event of a pandemic and the implementation of digital working.
