1 Signs and Symptoms
Subperiosteal abscess most commonly arises in the setting of orbital cellulitis, particularly in the pediatric population, and hence, typically presents with orbital signs and symptoms. In addition to proptosis, extraocular motility restriction, chemosis, and nonaxial globe displacement in the direction opposite the location of the SPA may be seen. The presence of a compressive optic neuropathy (decreased color vision, presence of a relative afferent pupillary defect) or evidence of orbital compartment syndrome necessitates urgent intervention. In most cases, coexisting rhinosinusitis is expected on imaging. In general, nearly two-third of patients with orbital cellulitis-related SPA and normal vision function can be managed conservatively and do not require surgical intervention.
