Ensure Healthy Development for All Youth

Gerontological Social Work and the Grand Challenges

Abstract

Development of interventions and programs that address and prevent health and mental health crises in youth is the focal point of the Grand Challenge to ensure healthy development of youth. Many of the interventions and programs designed for ensuring healthy emotional, mental, behavioral, and physical development for youth only mention inclusion of parents, while not including other close family members, such as grandparents. This chapter describes the range of custodial and coparenting arrangements involving grandparents, the related risk, and protective factors for youth and identifies interventions that have demonstrated evidence of effectiveness with these families. The chapter ends with a discussion of future steps for practice, research, and policy related to innovative preventive interventions for youth in grandfamilies.
