Abstract
Pathologic p waves in sinus rhythm (SR) are not as serious as QRS alterations. However, abnormal p waves may give some insight into hemodynamic abnormalities, especially if they are associated with pathologic QRS complexes.
The classical p mitrale, p pulmonale, and p biatriale are attributable to chronic overload of the left, right, or both atria, with consecutive hypertrophy and dilatation (enlargement) of the respective atria. In general, left atrial enlargement is used as a synonym for p mitrale, right atrial enlargement for p pulmonale, and biatrial enlargement for p biatriale.
