Abstract

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has assumed an important role in the diagnosis and staging of malignant gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary cancers. For gastrointestinal malignancies, endoscopy is usually performed prior to EUS to establish the diagnosis, which should be confirmed by histological examination of the biopsy specimen. Appropriate treatment, such as endoscopic treatment, surgical treatment, or chemotherapy, can be optimally chosen by the staging of tumor with EUS.
