Abstract
Until not many years ago, the control and management of quality was regarded in a very narrow fashion, and treated as being essentially identical with inspection. Indeed, the title of the person we now call ‘Quality Manager’ and the scope of his/her duties was summed up in the title ‘Chief Inspector’. The main technique used in controlling quality would have been seen as the use of mathematically derived statistical sampling inspection.
