Abstract

The first edition of this book was published in 1989. Since then there have been profound and far-reaching changes in the organization and management of health and social care in Great Britain. The government intends that as a result of these changes there will be specific, measurable improvements in the health and wellbeing of the population and a greater emphasis on the outcomes of health and social care than on the means of producing them. In order to achieve these policy objectives, the government and its agencies (including the National Health Service) are building on a broader conception of health and its determinants than hitherto. Among the origins of this broader understanding has been the application of social and behavioural sciences to health and social care. Psychologists now have many new and challenging opportunities to contribute to the improvement of public and individual health.
