Abstract

In this paper, we point out the importance of the layers’s magnetic order on the properties of ferromagnetic/antiferro-magnetic (F/AF) based-sandwiches and more especially on the interlayer magnetic couplings (IMC). We study the magnetic properties of sandwiches based on F (Fe) and AF (Cr and Mn) layers in the itinerant magnetism framework and we use a real space tight binding method to determine the electronic structure at T = 0 K. The amplitudesandthe orientations of the magnetic moments of the AF layers are determined, the structure of the magnetic walls and their pinning at the interfaces are studied for perfect and diffuse interfaces. The Fe-Cr exchange anisotropy and the IMC are related to the magnetic structure, those couplings resulting from intrinsic quadratic and biquadratic contributions for perfect interfaces.
