Surface Chemistry of Silanes at the Interface

Abstract

Practical experience with the silane coupling agents in reinforced composites indicates that only a very small proportion of silane at the interface is sufficient to provide marked improvements in composite properties. The small amounts involved, and the fact that silanes are buried in the matrix resin during fabrication, makes it very difficult to study the nature of the coupling action by ordinary chemical analysis. Prototype chemical reactions have been demonstrated between coupling agents and matrix resins, but it is possible that reactions may be quite different when the silane is aligned in a very thin film on a solid substrate rather than dissolved in the matrix resin.
