Abstract

In 1951, a standard textbook of hematology reported the virtual absence of satisfactory information about the blood in old age.1 Although many studies of the effects of aging on peripheral blood cells and bone marrow have been carried out in the intervening years, a great deal of uncertainty and controversy about the nature of these effects remains. Well-designed gerontological studies are difficult to perform. Conclusions have frequently been drawn on the basis of data generated by studies in which methodology has been insufficient to distinguish between specific hematological effects of aging and effects of disease states that are prevalent in old age. This chapter will critically review the reported effects of aging on the structure and function of the peripheral blood and bone marrow, discuss the effects of drugs on the blood and bone marrow in old age, and present considerations for investigators who plan and carry out clinical trials in the elderly.
