Abstract

Neutron-scattering studies /1/ revealed the existence of anomalies in the phonon dispersion curves (Fig.1) of superconducting transition metal compounds such as the carbides and nitrides, thus establishing an empirical correlation between actual or incipient lattice instabilities and high superconducting transition temperatures. These instabilities are usually associated with a relatively high density of d-states at the Fermi level. However, this is in direct contradiction to the fact that both the superconductivity and the phonon anomalies disappear when we go from the carbides and nitrides to the oxides, or introduce vacancies, whereas the d-electron density of states further increases.
