The Functional Genomics Experiment (FuGE) model is a set of computational resources, designed to facilitate rapid prototyping of new data exchange formats and corresponding relational database schemas for the life sciences. It comprises a Unified Modeling Language (UML) object model with software for automatically generating different implementations, including an XML Schema (XSD) for the exchange standard, a relational database schema, and a programming layer in Java to interface between the XSD and the database. Bioinformatics groups can develop extensions of FuGE through two modes – either by extending the object model in free graphical editing software, or by working directly with a cut-down version of the XSD (FuGE-light), to create new models for the biological domain of interest.
