Abstract

Let us begin on a note of optimism. In terms of surviving to adulthood, life expectancy, and the chances of a living a life relatively free from the threat of fatal disease, the British people have perhaps never had it so good. Present standards of health are relatively high, not only in comparison with past generations, but also internationally. Britain in the 1990s is a comparatively healthy place in which to be born and to live.
