Abstract

It has been established that Tinnitus is a widespread and distressing complaint, which has troubled medical science since Hippocrates [1]. However, current international interest has now been stimulated especially in view of litigation and potential treatment.

One of the main causes of tinnitus is by exposure to noise [2]. The levels and frequency content of machine tool noise are comparable with those which were experimentally used to induce tinnitus in normal hearing individuals [3,4].

This paper outlines the extent of the problem as surveyed [5], and attempts to relate this to noise legislation which in time will almost certainly include increasing litigation from tinnitus sufferers who operate in noissy environments, comparable with thos prevalent in the machine tool industry.

Current trends in the treatment of this complaint are discussed with suggestions as to the steps which industrialists should take to protect their employees from the hazard of noise induced tinnitus.
