Vertigo and Dizziness

Abstract

The most important clinical syndromes are treated in individual sections organized as follows: patient medical history, clinical aspects and natural course, pathophysiology and principles of therapy, pragmatic therapy, ineffective treatments, as well as differential diagnoses and clinical problems.

The different disorders are presented in the following order:

  • Benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo with its various forms of canalolithiasis and cupulolithiasis of the posterior, horizontal, and anterior semicircular canals

  • Vestibular neuritis, an acute partial unilateral vestibular deficit

  • Menières disease due to endolymphatic hydrops including vestibular drop attacks

  • Vestibular paroxysmia due to neurovascular cross-compression of the eighth nerve

  • Bilateral vestibulopathy due to labyrinthine or eighth nerve disorders

  • Perilymph fistulas and superior canal dehiscence syndrome.
