Abstract

Primary tracheal tumors are sporadic and represent 0.1% of all malignancy. The low index of suspicion and nonspecific symptoms often result in diagnostic delays. Surgery is the primary treatment with the optimal survival rates. Radiation can play a vital role in adjuvant, curative (unresectable), and palliative settings.

Lack of a standard staging system is a significant challenge, and the current state of primary tracheal cancer literature reflects a lack of a high level of evidence interventions. The management relies on available low-quality evidence, with databases lacking complete details and jeopardized by geographical bias. Using a standard staging system, creating a central/national level rare disease database, and rigorous data recording would help overcome some of the current shortcomings. Managing these rare tumors in experienced centers with multidisciplinary expertise is recommended.
