External Perception Matters: The Phenomenon of Identity Coupling in Interorganizational Relations

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates interorganizational relations (IORs) via 16 nonprofit organizations serving Chinese Canadians in Canada. This study reveals how potential partnering organizations perceive each other’s organizational identities that influence the formation and outcomes of IORs. An organizational ecological perspective of organizational identity is adopted. The study finds that value-based and resource-based organizational identity coupling of potential partnering organizations can facilitate the respective forms of IORs. The facilitating effect of Identity coupling is weakened in the presence of a third party with resource. The study demonstrates the utility of the orgnization ecology’s organizational identity literature and contributes to our understanding of value-based IORs.

Résumé

Cette étude qualitative examine les relations interorganisationnelles de 16 organismes sans but lucratif au service des Sino-Canadiens du Canada. Elle révèle que la façon dont les organismes partenaires potentiels perçoivent l’identité organisationnelle des uns et des autres influence la création et les résultats des relations interorganisationnelles. Un point de vue d’écologie organisationnelle de l’identité est ainsi adopté. L’étude démontre que l’alliage des identités organisationnelles à base de valeur et de ressources des organismes partenaires potentiels peut faciliter les formes respectives de relations interorganisationnelles. L’effet de l’alliage des identités est affaibli en présence d’un tiers muni de ressources. La présente étude démontre l’utilité de la documentation sur l’identité organisationnelle à écologie connexe et nous aide à mieux comprendre les relations interorganisationnelles à base de valeur.

Zusammenfassung

Diese qualitative Studie untersucht anhand von 16 gemeinnützigen Organisationen für chinesische Kanadier in Kanada organisationsübergreifende Beziehungen. Die Studie zeigt, dass die Gründung und das Ergebnis der organisationsübergreifenden Beziehungen davon beeinflusst werden, wie potenzielle Partnerorganisationen die Identität der jeweils anderen Organisation wahrnehmen. Man wendet die Perspektive der organisatorischen Ökologie hinsichtlich der organisatorischen Identität an. Die Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Verbindung der wertorientierten und ressourcenbasierten organisatorischen Identität potenzieller Partnerorganisationen die jeweiligen Formen der organisationsübergreifenden Beziehungen begünstigen kann. Der Wirkungseffekt der Identitätsverbindung wird in Gegenwart einer dritten Partei, die über Ressourcen verfügt, geschwächt. Die Studie demonstriert die Nützlichkeit der Literatur zur organisatorischen Ökologie und organisatiorischen Identität und trägt zu unserem Verständnis von wertorientierten organisationsübergreifenden Beziehungen bei.

Résumén

El presente estudio cualitativo investiga las relaciones interorganizacionales (IOR, por sus siglas en inglés) a través de 16 organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro que prestan sus servicios a canadienses chinos en Canadá. El presente estudio revela que la forma en la que las organizaciones con potencial de asociación perciben las identidades organizativas mutuas influye en la formación y el resultado de las IOR. Se adopta una perspectiva de la ecología organizacional de la identidad organizativa. El estudio encuentra que el acoplamiento de la identidad organizativa basada en valores y basada en recursos de las organizaciones con potencial de asociación puede facilitar las formas respectivas de IOR. El efecto facilitador del acoplamiento de la identidad se debilita en presencia de una tercera parte con recursos. El presente estudio demuestra la utilidad del material publicado sobre la identidad organizativa de la ecología organizacional y contribuye a nuestra comprensión de las IOR basadas en valores.

摘要

在本定性研究中,我们通过加拿大16家为加籍华人服务的非营利性组织,对组织间关系(inter-organizational relations (IORs))进行了探究。本研究显示,潜在合作组织看待对方组织身份的方式影响IORs的形成与结果。我们采用了组织身份的组织生态环境观点。本研究发现,潜在合作组织间以价值为基础以及以资源为基础的组织身份耦合(identity coupling),对IORs各种形式有促进作用。存在具有资源的第三方时,身份耦合的促进作用被削弱。本研究展示了对组织生态与组织身份文献的运用,有助于我们对以价值为基础的IORs的理解。

تبحث هذه الدراسة النوعية العلاقات المشتركة بين المنظمات (IORs) عن طريق 16منظمة غير ربحية التي تخدم الكنديين الصينيين في كندا. تكشف هذه الدراسة كيفية إدراك المنظمات الشراكة المحتملة للهويات التنظيمية لكل منهما يؤثر على تشكيل ونتائج العلاقات المشتركة بين المنظمات (IORs). تم إعتماد منظور البيئة التنظيمية للهوية التنظيمية. وجدت الدراسة أن الهوية التنظيمية القائمة على أساس القيمة والقائمة على الموارد المقترن للمنظمات الشراكة المحتملة يمكن أن يسهل أشكال العلاقات المشتركة بين المنظمات (IORs). تأثير تسهيل اقتران الهوية يضعف في وجود طرف ثالث مع الموارد. توضح هذه الدراسة إستخدام الدراسات التنظيمية في أدب الهوية التنظيمية وتسهم في فهمنا للعلاقات المشتركة بين المنظمات (IORs)على أساس القيمة.
