History of quality management

Abstract

It currently seems that quality management is an achievement of recent decades mainly found in industry. However, evolution in quality management in medicine, driven by Earnest A. Codman, MD, a Boston- based orthopedic surgeon, date back to the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In the middle of the 20th century Avedis Donabedian, MD, developed an important theoretical framework for quality assurance and the measurement thereof in medicine. Many of the concepts and instruments applied to quality improvement in health care systems originally stem from industry. Herein we characterize the landmarks of the first century of quality assurance and quality management initiatives in medicine and industry.

Zusammenfassung

Gegenwärtig entsteht der Eindruck, Qualitätssicherung bzw. Qualitätsmanagement seien moderne industrielle Errungenschaften. Hierbei wird übersehen, dass es bereits im 19. Jahrhundert und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts mit dem Bostoner Chirurgen Earnest A. Codman, MD, Entwicklungen hin zur Qualitätssicherung in der Medizin gegeben hat. Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden diese Initiativen unter anderem von Avedis Donabedian, MD, strukturell und auch inhaltlich weiter geführt.

Viele der früher und auch heute noch in der Medizin eingesetzten Instrumente und Konzepte der Qualitätssicherung kommen ursprünglich aus der Industrie.

Dieser Beitrag stellt die wesentlichsten Entwicklungsschritte der ersten 100 Jahre Qualitätssicherung bzw. Qualitätsmanagement in Medizin und Industrie dar.
