Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of surfactants adsorbed to colloidal particles

Abstract

The stabilization of colloidal silver particles has been studied by SERS. Replacement of the primary anionic stabilizer, present during colloid preparation, by cationic surfactants was monitored by the corresponding changes in the SERS spectrum. Partial information on the geometry of adsorption was obtained. Small silver particles prepared by γ-irradiation can be protected from air oxidation by a compact layer of perfluoro-surfactant stabilizer. A quantitative model for changes in the absorption spectrum caused by surface oxidation of the silver spheres is presented.
