Vibration Welding of Carpet to Polypropylene Substrate

Abstract

Carpet has been used in automobile door assemblies extensively through vibration welding to the polypropylene substrate. Many carpet backing materials do not have any polypropylene materials so that the bond strength is dominated by mechanical interlocking. The effect of substrate surface condition and the effect of welding parameters to the bond strength have not been reported in the literature. This study evaluated the effect of substrate surface condition and three major welding parameters on the bond strength. It was found that the vibration amplitude is the most dominate factor in affecting the bond strength followed by weld time and pressure. In addition, substrate surface conditions had only minor effect on the bonding strength.
