Summary

The maintenance of an LCM-free colony of mice in Kenya is described. Attention is drawn to the dangers of reinfection by wild rodents and, possibly, other means. Details are given of the measures instigated to control rodents and other pests, to sterilise or disinfect incoming food, bedding and equipment and the training of staff in hygienic techniques. The problems encountered in maintaining such a colony in a developing country are outlined.

Résumé

Cet article décrit l'entretien au Kenya d'un élevage de souris indemne de chorioméningite lymphocytaire. On attire l'attention sur les dangers de réinfection que constituent les rongeurs sauvages et, éventuellement, d'autres vecteurs. Des détails sont fournis à propos des mesures mises en oeuvre pour lutter contre les rongeurs et les autres parasites, pour stériliser ou désinfecter les aliments, les cages et le matériel, enfin pour entraîner le personnel aux méthodes d'hygiène. Les problèmes rencontrés pour l'entretien d'un tel élevage dans un pays en voie de déve oppement sont soulignés.

El mantenimiento de una colonia de ratones, libre de LCM en Kenya es descrito. Se hace hincapié sobre los peligros de reinfección por roedores silvestres y por otros medios. Se dan detalles de las medidas urgidas para controlar roedores y otras pestes, para esterilizar y desinfectar alimentos, cama y equipo y para entrenar al personal en tecnicas higiénicas. Se hace un bosquejo de los problemas encontrados en mantener tal colonia en un pais en desarrollo.
