Abstract
The international literature contains few reports on hematomas of the basal ganglia after brain injury in childhood. The introduction of CT scanning has improved the success rate in diagnosing this traumatic lesion. Four children with hematomas of the basal ganglia are reported. In all cases, we observed coma, decerebration, and hypertonia on the day following injury. Two patients survied with minimal neurological problems/complications. We conclude that damage to the basal ganglia (contusion or hematoma) requires similar measures to those for severe craniocerebral injuries and that with good management, contrary to what was believed until recently, these patients may have a favorable survival rate.
