Abstract

As mobile devices have become increasingly ubiquitous in society, the potential for impacting student learning in classroom settings has been the subject of debate. Instant information access and collaboration have been mentioned as potential benefits of mobile device access. However, the potential for mobile devices to foster self-directed learning in students and improve student achievement on open-ended design problems has not been explored. Therefore, this chapter presents the findings from research with middle school students working in small groups on an engineering design challenge. The findings explore the relationships between access to mobile devices, student achievement, and student self-directed learning.
