Abstract
Partition is not without economic consequences. What is missing in the Irish space economy as a whole is a strong development pole. This is largely due to a lack of hardly replaceable economic potential, and more precisely, to the smallness of the internal markets in both Irish statelets. The frontier between the two Irelands is not an impassable barrier: after all they are both within the European Community. But Northern Ireland, in its present condition, is a burden to Great Britain and definitely not a source of support to Eire.
