Abstract
This paper deals with the issue of finding and retrieving information from repositories linked by computer networks which are distributed around the world. The informatics community has undertaken a number of developments that help the user to discover and access such information. These include the infrastructure of a network (Internet), various means by which information can be exchanged information (e.g. HTTP, Gopher, Z39.50, FTP), and tools that act as interfaces between the user and information. This paper describes the most used protocols and tools and discusses their relative merits and drawbacks. An example of the use of network information retrieval tools within the Environmental Science community is presented.
