Abstract
SOME patients recover uneventfully from illness or injury; others are permanently disabled. A patient’s handicap will depend on his age, his job, his premorbid personality, his family and not least the quality of medical care which he receives. This includes not only definitive medical treatment, such as the administration of antibiotics or immobilisation of a fractured limb, but also skilful nursing, good laboratory and radiological facilities and effective rehabilitation.
