Status of Solar Energy Conversion and Applications in Yemen

Abstract

Supplying the energy needs of a large section of the Yemeni population is of paramount importance to the development of the country and indeed forms a major constituent of the government policy. This paper outlines the constrains in energy supply and shows that the total installed capacity of 704 MW provides a mere 55 W per capita which is in turn skewed in favour of the urban inhabitancy In this part of the world energy obtained by photovoltaic conversion is in its infancy, however, there are various sectors such as telecommunication, water pumping, health care, radio and television transmission which use this technology.
