Abstract

Basalt intrusions cutting Tertiary strata have been newly discovered north of the central Oman Mountains. The intrusions are of small size but their presence has considerable implications. The intrusives are undersaturated alkali olivine basalts whose depth of origin is generally considered to be circa 50 km. This occurrence implies an extensional regime at the time of their emplacement and that the intrusion could be via deep seated fault planes. They are associated with deep mantle melting and ponding of these lavas in the crust could develop hydrothermal circulation related to mineralization in this area.
