Abstract
About 800 depository institutions (banks, trust and finance companies, and credit unions) and nondepository institutions (insurance companies and investment dealers) operated in Canada during 1987. The Canadian financial services industry employed 600,000 people and produced about 15% of Canada’s gross domestic product during 1987 (Falconer, 1988). A summary of the powers and types of businesses conducted by various types of financial institutions, along with the responsibilities of their major regulators, is presented in table 1-1.
