A Lubrication Number For Mechanical Seals

Abstract

A lubrication number is introduced, which determines the mode of lubrication as a function of the operational conditions under which a contact, for instance, a seal is operating. In the present paper friction experiments are described which were performed on a pin-on-disc machine. The experiments were performed with seal material combinations of carbon against SiC or WC and water as lubricant under conditions of constant normal load (contact pressure) and varying sliding velocity. The experimental results, i.e. the transitions from hydrodynamic lubrication to mixed lubrication (HL-ML), and from mixed lubrication to boundary lubrication (ML-BL), were compared with those presented in literature and they were presented in a lubrication mode transition diagram.

The lubrication number was shown to determine rather well the transitions between the lubrication modes HL, ML and BL for mechanical seals (if no hydrostatic effects are present) and with that the functional behaviour of such seals.
