Abstract
Recent interest in near-surface bubble distributions stems both from an environmental interest in the role bubbles play in the upper ocean layer and from the recognition that they may contribute significantly to surface reverberation. Bubble clouds are injected by breaking waves, but their subsequent organization depends on the bubble sizes, subsurface flow field, and other factors. Recent work carried out in the ONR Special Research Project has addressed several aspects of bubble distribution and behaviour. A brief summary of recent results is presented, identifying some of the factors that are relevant to understanding bubble distributions and their potential significance to surface scattering.
