Abstract

Today, in the United States, there are an estimated 15 million children under the age of 18 living at home with at least one alcoholic parent. There are, inclusive of that number, 28–34 million people who are, or have been, raised in a home with at least one alcoholic parent. We know little about this special population of people. A review of the literature demonstrates an emphasis on genetic causation factors of alcoholism1–8, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome9–17, the relationships of alcoholism in a parent to asocial and problematic behaviours in the adolescent young18–23, and the relationship of child abuse to alcohol abuse or alcoholism24–33.
