Abstract
Three years ago, in June 1979, two members of the British Doctors Group1 for recovering alcoholics (which by then had been in existence for 5 years), sent a letter to The Lancet briefly describing the preliminary results of a questionnaire enquiry among members of the Group. (The Lancet did not publish the letter.) Replies had been received from 59 doctors out of 120 members to whom the questionnaire was sent (by the time the letter was written); several further replies arrived too late for the results to be considered so that the preliminary response rate was taken as 50%. Of the 59 individuals, three had filled in their forms incompletely.
