Abstract
Historically quantum mechanics was developed for the purpose of explaining discrete spectra. The first discrete spectrum was that of the hydrogen atom. The second discrete spectrum was that of nuclei which are quantum bound states of nucléons. Quantum mechanics has been very successful in explaining these two traditional spectra.
