Abstract

A greater proportion of European gas consumption is met by imports, as demand growth continues to outpace growth in production

Although gas consumption in European countries registered a slight decrease between 2005 and 2006, in contrast to the trend observed in the last few years, it is expected to grow by 2 to 2.5% per year by 2015, according to CEDIGAZ. This forecasted growth will be led by increasing gas power demand – in Europe, two-thirds of new electricity plants under construction are gas-fired (see Generation Chapter) – and by additional economic growth in the new EU Member countries.
