De meerwaarde van protocolmodificaties voor de behandeling van parodontitis

Samenvatting

Ondanks de bewezen doeltreffendheid van het klassieke driedelige behandelprotocol voor parodontitis (hygiënische fase, correctieve fase en nazorg), werden in het verleden steeds modificaties voorgesteld om de klinische en microbiologische parameters te verbeteren. Dit hoofdstuk gaat over de mogelijke meerwaarde van een aantal van deze aanpassingen gebaseerd op klinische onderzoeken. De effecten van Er:YAG–laser als een alternatief voor mechanische worteldesinfectie worden besproken. Tevens wordt de parodontale chirurgie als de initiële therapie voor gevorderde parodontitis vergeleken met de conventionele therapie wat betreft klinische resultaten, stoeltijd en financiële impact voor de patiënt. Het gebruik van antimicrobiële agentia komt ook aan de orde. Verder wordt de meerwaarde van antibiotica bij verschillende vormen van parodontitis toegelicht. Daarbij worden de effecten van verschillende antiseptica bij actieve behandeling en nazorg besproken.
