Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk worden de diverse bewegingsmogelijkheden van de onderkaak ten opzichte van de schedel beschreven, inclusief de rol van de tanden en kiezen daarbij (occlusie en articulatie). Naast de grensbewegingen van de onderkaak worden de vrije of habituele onderkaakbewegingen beschreven en wordt stilgestaan bij de bewegingen van de onderkaak tijdens het kauwen. Tevens wordt ingegaan op de krachten die werkzaam zijn in het kauwstelsel tijdens bijten en kauwen en wordt een korte beschrijving gegeven van de neuromusculaire sturing van kauwbewegingen.
