Abstract
Arthritides as occasional symptoms accompanying viral diseases are well documented. In most cases, they manifest as a transient arthralgia only, frequently associated with myalgia. Arthritides in the narrower sense with mono- or oligoarticular symptoms are present less often. These processes are characterized by effusions and are self-limiting, remission is usually within a few days, rarely within weeks. A few cases of polyarthritides, however, have been reported, accompanying rubella and resembling rheumatoid arthritis (RA; Vischer 1996). Males suffering from epidemic parotitis (mumps) may develop arthritides in large joints. Arthralgias have also been observed in the prodromal stage of hepatitis B.
