Abstract
On the 24th of May 1994, the cardiac surgical unit at the Prince Charles Hospital began a clinical trial evaluating the ATS mechanical valve. At that time, the options at our hospital for valve replacement were the St. Jude Medical mechanical valve, the Carpentier-Edwards SAV xenograft in the aortic position, the Medtronic Intact xenograft, the cryopreserved allograft in the aortic position, and the occasional pulmonary autograft. More recently, the Carpentier-Edwards Perimount heterograft has become available and the St. Jude Medical X-cell valve has started clinical trials.
