Summary
“Fibromyalgia” is not a definite diagnosis, but, rather, a clinical syndrome to be checked for by differential diagnosis. Different clinical mechanisms such as mechanical load caused by posture insufficiency and obesity, or bacterial/viral infection may lead to a complex fibromyalgia syndrome. Findings of a retrospective clinical examination of 20 fibromyalgia patients (= 1% of all patients of our clinic) and of a prospective horizontal study of 55 female patients (age 25–79 years) without fibromyalgia symptoms support this hypothesis. Almost half of the patients in both groups showed definite signs of “bad posture” and/or overweight. Patients in both groups also had a high rate of symmetrical and asymmetrical tender points at different body sites.
