Abstract

A lawsuit was recently filed on behalf of four patients who had been sterilized when they were teenaged residents in the state of Virginia. The class-action suit, filed with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) asks that Virginia officials notify each of the estimated 7200 men and women who had been sterilized at state mental institutions between 1924 and 1973 that they had undergone a surgical procedure which would permanently prevent childbearing or fatherhood.
