Abstract

According to a recently published survey by the American College of Surgeons, 56.6% of all cases of adenocarcinoma of the prostate (pCA) are detected by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) [5]. The high prevalence of the disease and the availability of successful treatment modalities for early-stage pCa prompted us to evaluate modalities currently relevant in diagnosis of pCa such as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) with respect to their indicative potential in cases of pCA not detectable by digital rectal examination (DRE).
